A Career in Health and Safety: Insights from Rachel Butler

The health and safety (H&S) profession can provide safe work environments and protect lives. Nevertheless, the field is often misunderstood, stereotyped, and in need of fresh perspectives. In a recent podcast episode from the Rebranding Safety series, Rachel Butler, a trailblazer in the H&S industry, shared her journey and insights into making the profession more diverse, inclusive, and impactful. Here’s what we learned about building a meaningful career in health and safety.

Breaking Stereotypes in Health and Safety

Rachel Butler’s Inspiring Journey

Rachel Butler’s career in H&S is a testament to perseverance and challenging norms. In 2016, she became the youngest female Chartered H&S professional, breaking through barriers in an industry traditionally dominated by older males. Starting in a compliance support role at a construction company, Rachel steadily advanced by taking training opportunities, gaining on-site experience, and challenging herself daily. Her story proves that with passion and hard work, anyone can succeed in this field, regardless of age or background.

The Need for Diversity

Rachel emphasises the importance of diversity in H&S. The profession has historically been labelled as an “old white man’s club,” but this is changing. Bringing in people from different age groups, genders, and cultural backgrounds introduces fresh ideas, challenges outdated practices, and fosters innovation. “Younger professionals and diverse voices bring new energy to an industry that desperately needs innovation and change,” Rachel explains.

Challenges in the Health and Safety Profession

Negative Perceptions

The H&S profession often faces criticism for being overly bureaucratic or restrictive. Media portrayal doesn’t help, with safety measures usually seen as excessive, such as requiring goggles for children playing traditional games like conkers. Rachel highlights that this “tick-box culture” detracts from the true purpose of H&S: protecting lives and improving workplace conditions.

Blame Culture

A significant challenge in H&S is the blame culture surrounding workplace incidents. Legal claims and fears of liability can lead to over-the-top safety measures that don’t necessarily enhance safety but instead hinder practical problem-solving.

Isolation in the Role

H&S professionals sometimes feel isolated, as their role can be misunderstood or undervalued. They are often seen as enforcers rather than enablers, which can make it challenging to foster collaboration and trust within organisations.

Opportunities for Growth and Positive Change

Rebranding the Profession

The H&S industry is gradually shifting its focus to include well-being and mental health alongside physical safety. This shift helps create a more holistic approach to workplace safety, making the profession more relevant and appealing to younger generations.

Youth Engagement

Rachel is passionate about engaging young people and encouraging them to explore careers in H&S. Initiatives like school visits, mentorship programs, and campaigns such as Safety for Good aim to showcase the profession’s potential to make a meaningful difference. “Even if we inspire just one young person to join the field, that’s one more fresh perspective helping to drive the industry forward,” Rachel notes.

The Role of Technology

Technological advancements are transforming the H&S landscape. From digital risk assessments to wearable safety devices, innovation is paving the way for more efficient and effective safety practices. This creates opportunities for tech-savvy professionals to bring their expertise to the field.

Advice for Aspiring Health and Safety Professionals

1. Start Small

Many professionals, like Rachel, began their careers in entry-level roles. Look for opportunities in compliance or administrative support to get your foot in the door.

2. Invest in Learning

Certifications like NEBOSH or NVQs are valuable, but on-the-job training and continuous learning are equally important.

3. Challenge Norms

Don’t be afraid to question outdated practices. Fresh perspectives are critical for driving innovation and improvement.

4. Network and Collaborate

Build connections with experienced professionals. Mentorship can provide invaluable guidance and insights.

5. Stay Resilient

The H&S profession comes with challenges, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. “Every time someone says, ‘You made my job easier,’ it’s a reminder of why we do this,” Rachel shares.

The Future of Health and Safety

The health and safety profession is at a crossroads, with an urgent need for fresh ideas, diverse perspectives, and innovative approaches. By breaking stereotypes, fostering inclusivity, and leveraging technology, the industry can continue to evolve and meet the demands of modern workplaces. Rachel’s journey reminds us that H&S is more than rules and regulations. It’s about protecting lives, improving well-being, and making a lasting impact. For those who are caring, curious, and driven, there’s no better time to join this dynamic and rewarding field.

Join the Movement

If Rachel’s story inspires you, consider exploring a career in health and safety. Whether through mentorship, training, or simply asking questions, there are many paths to success. Let’s work together to rebrand safety and build a brighter future for the profession. “Challenge yourself, believe in yourself, and remember: even small changes can make a big difference.” – Rachel Butler.
